Introduction of Urahoro:

Urahoro is a little town located in the Tokachi region of Eastern Hokkaido. The Tokachi region is famous for its dairy farming as it accounts for the majority of fresh milk produced in the entire Hokkaido. It is also rich in farming, fishing and forestry resources. However, like many other towns in Hokkaido, Urahoro is rapidly declining in terms of population and economy. In order to instill hometown pride and innovation into the local children, Urahoro integrates its primary industries into the elementary and middle school curriculum, so that children growing up in the town feel a sense of belonging and connection to the town and its industries.

Learning Points:

  • Investigate how the old and new residents brainstorm ideas on the reutilization of an abandoned school building, making it into a new innovation hub.

  • Hear from local entrepreneurs who utilized the local Japanese rose and made it into a new brand for commercial purposes in order to drive the local economy.

  • Study the social contexts of natural resource management in Urahoro.

  • Discuss the principles and ideas of sustainability and how they are adapted to the complex reality.

  • Discover how innovative solutions to problems caused by population decline, aging population and tourism require an integration of social, economic and environmental aspects of sustainability.

  • Learn about the unique education system in Urahoro that integrates the town’s forestry, farming and fishing industries into its elementary and middle school curriculum.
